Generational Trauma: Understanding and Supporting Teens in the Cycle of Inherited Trauma

Session Details
This session plans to assist workers and families with an understanding of what generational trauma is, as well as its effects; specifically in the independent living domains of relationships and communication, self-care, and looking forward. Within these domain areas, the session will discuss some of the external signs of generational trauma, and some practical ways to address them. Guidance provided will include aids to understand emotional development, healthy relationship practices, and self-esteem once trauma has occurred. Lastly, attendants will be provided information on additional resources for further knowledge and understanding.
About the Presenter
Samantha Battle was born and raised in Newport News, Va. She graduated from Menchville High School in 2005 and earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Norfolk State University in 2009.
Samantha previously served as an Independent Living Coordinator and Family Services Specialist for the Foster Care unit of the Hampton Department of Human Services from 2018 to 2024. In June 2024, Samantha left her employment with the Department to more avidly pursue other professional aspirations. She and her husband, Eric, are the Co-Founders of their organization, The Battle Brand, whose mission is to help youth and families not only survive, but thrive in today's society. Through The Battle Brand, Samantha is currently a Parent Coach, focused on equipping parents and caregivers with knowledge and skills to battle for the success of their family.
Personally, Samantha is wife to Eric Battle, and they are the proud parents of 6 amazing children, MaKaylee, Christian, Eric Jr., Kian, Bella-Rose, and Savannah. Samantha's hope is to positively impact the lives of children and families through education, demonstration, relatability, and advocacy.
